Phonological instruction is crucial for reading successfully. When beginning readers are taught the necessary phonics knowledge of the letter-sound code, as well as the high frequency words (sight words), they can read texts on their own. Successful readers have accquired phonological awareness, letter recognition, orthographic skills and reading fluency.
